The talented Dude of Bharathanatyam
Bharath Ram, a 14 year old born in San Antonio, TX, to Indian Immigrants, hails from a family of art enthusiasts who love art in all of its forms. Bharath has been learning ‘Bharatanatyam’, the ancient classical Indian dance form from South India, for the last 8 years at both the Arathi School of Indian Dance and more recently, at the Kalalaya Indian Performing Arts.

At the young age of four, Bharath was discovered by Guru Rajam Ramamurthy of the Arathi School of Indian Dance. She taught Bharath the basics of the art form before he was put under the wings of Guru Kausi Subramaniam. Through the years Bharath has performed in various productions and a few to mention are Seetha Kalyana, Chandanbala, La Meri, Kavita and Dashavatara. He is always eager to show his dancing skills at year round events in the community such as the Folk Life Festival, Indian Festival, Asian Festival, Luminaria, and other charitable and promotional events.

Bharath gave his Bharathanatyam Dance Debut performance at Carver Community Center on August 13, 2011 to a packed audience. Bharath has received various awards and accolades for his dance and below are details on a few.

Aside from dance, Bharath also learns the Mrudanga, the Carnatic violin, the Western violin, and Taekwondo. At school, Bharath is an honors student and participates in various academic, sports and cultural activities.

Bharath is very proud of his Indian heritage and likes to combine Indian art forms with his American way of life. He loves spending time with his family who are from Bangalore and is able to speak ‘Kannada’ the language of ‘Karnataka,’ a southern state in India. Bharath is a freshman at Health Careers High School.

Awards/Accomplishments in Bharatanatyam:
• Recipient of 2012 North Texas Dance Scholarship.
• First Prize in San Antonio City Talent Competition (2011) - $1000/- prize and a trophy.
• First prize in San Antonio District 9 and finalist at SA City Talent competition (2010).
• First prize in Dance competition at Southwest Regionals, in Dallas, TX, by Gemini TV, India (2010).
• Finalist for Dance competition held at East Rutherford, NJ (2010).
• Finalist for Thyagaraja Festival Dance competition held at Cleveland, OH (2011).
• As a 12 year old, gave a 3 hour performance with his sister in Mysore, India.
• First male to graduate from Indian Dance schools in San Antonio.
• Based on our research, he is the youngest male dancer of American decent to do the Bharathanatyam Dance Debut (14 years and 3 months).
• His programs have been broadcast in TV stations in Bangalore (Janashri TV) and San Antonio Time Warner Public Channel.
